On September 23rd, 2021, the Boppy Company issued a voluntary recall of 3.3 million baby loungers after eight infants suffocated while sleeping on the pillow between 2015 and 2020. The three baby loungers being recalled are:
The recall comes one year after the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warned parents not to let infants go to sleep in products like these. The Boppy loungers may pose a risk of suffocation if babies are placed or move on their own into a position—such as on their stomach or side–that can obstruct breathing. There is also the risk of an infant rolling off the lounger and onto a soft surface that can obstruct breathing.
To sleep-deprived parents, these popular newborn loungers seemed like great products, but they were never intended for infant sleeping and included warnings against unsupervised use. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, babies should always sleep on their backs in a firm, empty crib to avoid suffocation. The design of the Boppy loungers goes directly against these safe-sleep guidelines which makes them risky because babies can and do fall asleep everywhere. According to CPSC Chairman Robert Adler ;“Loungers and pillow-like products are not safe for infant sleep, due to the risk of suffocation. Since we know that infants sleep so much of the time – even in products not intended for sleep – and since suffocation can happen so quickly, these Boppy lounger products are simply too risky to remain on the market.”
The Consumer Product Safety Commission is urging parents to stop using the recalled loungers and call The Boppy Company at 800-416-1355 for a full refund.
If you or someone you know is currently using a Boppy newborn lounger, please stop using it immediately. Furthermore, if your baby has suffered an injury or tragically lost their life because of one of these loungers, you should contact The Collins Law Firm as soon as possible.
